Sjevernoatlantski savez je međuvladina vojni savez na temelju Sjevernoatlantskog ugovora koji je potpisan 4. travnja 1949. To je politički i vojni savez zemalja članica iz Europe i Sjeverne Amerike koji se slažu pružiti vojnu i ekonomsku sigurnost za svaku druge. NATO čini sve njegove odluke konsenzusom i svake zemlje članice, bez obzira koliko veliki ili mali, ima jednaku reći.
