Stop giving them money and make them citizens subject to taxation, same as the rest of us. Sorry about people screwing you over hundreds of years ago, but i fail to see how that is my problem.

Aboriginals as first nations peoples should have the right to self govern and self education within a sovereign territorial state and derive their livelihoods, as they see fit, from the bounty those areas provide. If the government of Canada had reduced or expropriated parts of their traditional territories they should be compensated based upon the value of resources removed from their properties on an annual basis.

It should be distributed in a different way to make more of an impact and lessen the possibility of misappropriation.

The current funding structure needs serious review & overhaul. Just throwing more money at the problem won't solve it.

Funds should be given provided there is proper accountability to how it is dispersed.

It is not a matter of providing more money, its an issue of effective policy structures. Our current policies fail to recognize the structural issues preventing Indigenous people from equitable livelihoods. Education, water, housing and policing must be improved by working with the Indigenous to understand their values and how they can coincide with the dominant Western culture. We should not just throw more money into the hands of people who feel like they create policies in the interest of the Indigenous without actually considering these peoples needs from their perspective.

I don't think this is a problem cured by more money. There are deep systemic and cultural issues that cannot possibly go away on their own with a little capital injection.
I don't have an opinion on increasing or decreasing per se. First Nations is an umbrella with hundreds of different cultures and shared experiences beneath it. There is no single approach to fix what they used to call "the Indian Problem", but what broadly manifests as all the tragedy of a colonized, marginalized and discriminated population. Culture takes on a momentum of its own independent of the root causes of change. As plural as the experiences of aboriginals are, so to must be the solutions to end the inhumane marginalization that is happening to these Canadians across the country.
