The "free market" will only ever do anything if it ultimately makes a profit for the private capital-owners; it has absolutely no interest, or ability, in solving homelessness because guaranteeing housing for all people is not a profitable endeavor. If we want an economy that works for the interests of the actual public, then the public itself needs to be in charge of the economy, and not living at the mercy of the personal financial incentives of private individuals seeking their own profits over all else.
