This is just more political games from the Conservatives, trying to force an election rather than focusing on the real issues facing Canadians right now. Trudeau’s government isn’t perfect, but we need policies that prioritize healthcare, affordable housing, and income equality—not more partisan bickering. It’s frustrating to see opposition parties wasting time on power grabs instead of pushing for real progressive reforms. Let's focus on building a fairer society, not endless political drama.

Harris’s Fatal Shift: Abandoning the Anti-Trump Playbook for CEO Approval

Earlier this fall, one of Joe Biden’s closest aides felt compelled to tell the president a hard truth about Kamala Harris’s run for the presidency: “You have more to lose than she does.” And now he’s lost it. Joe Biden cannot escape the fact that his four years in office paved the way for the return of Donald Trump. This is his legacy. Everything else is an asterisk.In the hours after Harris’s defeat, I called and texted members of Biden’s inner circle to hear their postmortems of the campaign. They sounded as deflated as the rest of the Democratic elite. They also had a worry of their own: Members of Biden’s clan continue to stoke the delusion that its paterfamilias would have won the election, and some of his advisers feared that he might publicly voice that deeply misguided view.Although the Biden advisers I spoke with were reluctant to say anything negative about Harris as a candidate, they did level critiques of her campaign, based on the months they’d spent strategizing in anticipation of the election. Embedded in their autopsies was their own unstated faith that they could have done better.One critique holds that Harris lost because she abandoned her most potent attack. Harris began the campaign portraying Trump as a stooge of corporate interests—and touted herself as a relentless scourge of Big Business. During the Democratic National Convention, speaker after speaker inveighed against Trump’s oligarchical allegiances. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York bellowed, “We have to help her win, because we know that Donald Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets and greasing the palms of his Wall Street friends.”While Harris was stuck defending the Biden economy, and hobbled by lingering anger over inflation, attacking Big Business allowed her to go on the offense. Then, quite suddenly, this strain of populism disappeared. One Biden aide told me that Harris steered away from such hard-edged messaging at the urging of her brother-in-law, Tony West, Uber’s chief legal officer. (West did not immediately respond to a request for comment.) To win the support of CEOs, Harris jettisoned a strong argument that deflected attention from one of her weakest issues. Instead, the campaign elevated Mark Cuban as one of its chief surrogates, the very sort of rich guy she had recently attacked.

Free Speech Showdown: Inside X Corp’s Fight to Shield Users from Secret DOJ Subpoenas

For nearly a year, Elon Musk’s X Corp. has been waging a secret courtroom battle to weaken a potent and increasingly common tactic employed by the Justice Department: legal gag orders that prohibit social media companies from telling users when prosecutors demand access to their accounts.X took up the cause of the ex-FBI officials — Garret O’Boyle and Kyle Seraphin — after prosecutors served a grand jury subpoena on the company on Jan. 5, 2024, seeking detailed records associated with both men’s X accounts. The subpoena was accompanied by a nondisclosure order that forbade the social media giant from notifying the two men about the demand. The company quickly went to court to invalidate the order and inform O’Boyle and Seraphin about the subpoena.Though judges have unsealed some aspects of the case between X and the Justice Department, the names of the men and the specifics of their fight remain under a court-ordered seal. Using details in the unsealed filings and speaking with sources familiar with the matter, POLITICO has confirmed that the case is related to O’Boyle and Seraphin.X’s battle on behalf of the two men came after they had already become a cause célèbre on the right because of their public claims of political bias in the Justice Department and FBI. O’Boyle and Seraphin shared some of their concerns with congressional Republicans, who cast them as whistleblowers resisting Biden administration pressure. When X launched its fight against the nondisclosure order, the company argued that based on what was publicly known about the two men, the grand jury subpoena may have been “retaliatory.”Washington, D.C.’s Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg rejected X’s claims. Prosecutors, Boasberg concluded, had demonstrated that their investigation could be impaired if O’Boyle or Seraphin were told of the subpoena. Seraphin has since publicly claimed he was targeted by DOJ for retaliatory purposes.Despite the political overtones of the case, X and its high-powered legal team from WilmerHale have framed the battle as a pivot point in a much larger First Amendment fight that cuts across partisan lines: whether the government should be able to force social media companies to hand over their users’ information without first giving those users a chance to fight back.

Trump Unleashes Zeldin to Axe Climate Rules at EPA

President-elect Donald J. Trump announced on Monday that he would nominate former Representative Lee Zeldin, Republican of New York, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, a position that is expected to be central to Mr. Trump’s plans to dismantle landmark climate regulations.Mr. Trump campaigned on pledges to “kill” and “cancel” E.P.A. rules and regulations to combat global warming by restricting fossil fuel pollution from vehicle tailpipes, power plant smokestacks and oil and gas wells.In particular, Mr. Trump wants to erase the Biden administration’s most significant climate rule, which is designed to speed a transition away from gasoline-powered cars and toward electric vehicles.In a statement, Mr. Trump said Mr. Zeldin would “ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet.”Mr. Trump added that Mr. Zeldin would “set new standards on environmental review and maintenance that will allow the United States to grow in a healthy and well-structured way.”Perhaps more than many other federal agencies, the E.P.A. has been a particular target for Mr. Trump, who blames environmental regulations for hampering a variety of industries, including construction and oil and gas drilling. During his first term, Mr. Trump rolled back more than 100 environmental policies and regulations. President Biden restored many of them and strengthened several.Some people on Mr. Trump’s transition team say the agency needs a wholesale makeover and are even discussing moving the E.P.A. headquarters and its 7,000 workers out of Washington, D.C., according to multiple people involved in the discussions who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the transition.During his run for governor, Mr. Zeldin pledged to reverse New York’s 2015 ban on hydraulic fracturing, a technique for recovering gas and oil from shale rock that environmental advocates say can contaminate groundwater. He also called for construction of more gas pipelines and a suspension of the state gas tax.
