  • Anarcho-communism, also known as anarchist communism, is a political ideology that advocates for the abolition of the state, capitalism, wage labor, and private property. Instead, it proposes a society in which the means of production are owned communally and each individual contributes and receives according to their abilities and needs. This ideology is rooted in the principles of both anarchism and communism, hence the name anarcho-communism.

    The origins of anarcho-communism can be traced back to the 19th century, with figures such as Joseph Déjacque and Peter Kropotkin being key contributors to its development. Déjacque, a French anarchist, was the first person to use the term "libertarian" in a political sense, and his work laid the groundwork for the ideology. Kropotkin, a Russian philosopher and activist, further developed the theory in his book "The Conquest of Bread," where he argued for a society based on mutual aid, voluntary cooperation, and the common ownership of productive resources.

    Anarcho-communism gained significant traction during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The anarchist collectives established during this period were largely influenced by anarcho-communist principles, with workers self-managing their industries and communities operating on principles of mutual aid.

    Despite these historical instances, anarcho-communism has never been fully realized on a large scale. It remains a significant strain of anarchist thought, however, and continues to influence movements for social and economic justice around the world. Critics of anarcho-communism often point to its perceived impracticality, arguing that a society without a state or private property is unworkable or would devolve into chaos. Proponents, on the other hand, argue that it represents a path towards true freedom and equality, free from the hierarchies and inequalities inherent in capitalist systems.
