Three British opinion polls released late on Saturday presented a grim picture for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party, and one pollster warned that the party faced "electoral extinction" in July 4's election. The polls come just over halfway through the election campaign, after a week in which both the Conservatives and Labour set out their manifestos, and shortly before voters begin to receive postal ballots.Sunak surprised many in his own party by announcing an early election on May 22, against widespread expectations that he would wait until later in the year to allow more time for living standards to recover after the highest inflation in 40 years.Market research company Savanta found 46% support for Keir Starmer's Labour Party, up 2 points on the previous poll five days earlier, while support for the Conservatives dropped 4 points to 21%. The poll was conducted from June 12 to June 14 for the Sunday Telegraph, opens new tab. Labour's 25-point lead was the largest since the premiership of Sunak's predecessor, Liz Truss, whose tax cut plans prompted investors to dump British government bonds, pushing up interest rates and forcing a Bank of England intervention."Our research suggests that this election could be nothing short of electoral extinction for the Conservative Party," Chris Hopkins, political research director at Savanta, said.

A man wielding an ax on a street crowded with soccer fans was shot by the police on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany, only hours before the city was to host a game at the European Championship. The man threatened police officers with “a pickax and an incendiary device,” a police spokesman said on Sunday. When he did not respond to warnings, the police said, he was shot. The man was injured and was being treated, they confirmed. No fans nor police officers were injured. The incident took place in Hamburg’s entertainment district, a section of the city known as the Reeperbahn that is filled with restaurants and bars. At the time, the area was packed with thousands of fans who had arrived to see the Netherlands play Poland on Sunday afternoon.According to a spokeswoman for the Hamburg police and videos of the incident posted online, the man came out of a small restaurant with a small, double-bladed ax and a firebomb and threatened officers nearby.Standing behind a police barrier as fans watched only steps away, the man — dressed all in black — shouted and moved toward a group of about a dozen police officers, several of whom were pointing their weapons at him from either side of the barrier. He held the small ax in one hand and what appeared to be a bottle with a rag in its neck in the other.

8 Israeli soldiers have been killed in a blast in the Gaza Strip as forces continue to push in and around the southern city of Rafah. The Israeli troops were all killed inside an armoured personnel carrier during an ambush by Hamas fighters, the military said. The IDF convoy was returning from an overnight offensive on Hamas in which they killed some 50 gunmen when the terror group ambushed the soldiers. One of the vehicles was hit by a major explosion, killing and wounding the Israeli troops on board. It was not immediately clear if the bomb was planted under the tank ahead of time or if Hamas fighters placed the explosive device during the surprise attack, the Times of Israel reported. It's also being investigated whether explosives stored on the outside of the CEV contributed to the massive blast.
Former President Donald Trump on Saturday blasted illegal immigrant gangs terrorizing America as “animals” and warned the insecure border was disproportionately hurting black and Hispanic voters.Courting minority voters and conservatives at two different events in battleground Michigan, the former president turned to one of his favorite subjects: illegal immigration,Trump said the millions of illegal aliens flowing across the border are stealing jobs and draining government resources, especially in minority communities.“The people coming across the border — all those millions of people — they’re inflicting tremendous harm to our Black population and to our Hispanic population,” he declared. He also highlighted the toll that illegal foreign gangs like MS 13 and Venezuelan criminal gangs are inflicting.“They’re not human beings. They’re animals,” he said.
