Prison overcrowding is a social phenomenon occurring when the demand for space in prisons in a jurisdiction exceeds the capacity for prisoners.The issues associated with prison overcrowding are not new, and have been brewing for many years. During the United States’ War on Drugs, the states were left responsible for solving the prison overcrowding issue with a limited amount of money. Moreover, federal prison populations may increase if states adhere to federal policies, such as mandatory minimum sentences. On the other hand, the Justice Department provides billions of dollars a year…

@8T7LKKF4yrs4Y
Depends on the magnitude of the crime. Drug use or illegally dealing drugs like weed- probably yes.
@8R4CCZ74yrs4Y
Yes, but we should keep an eye on them for a few years before setting them fully free.
@8QFCQGTNew Democratic4yrs4Y
Yes, depending on what it is they are serving time for.
@8NRTRF54yrs4Y

Yes and they should be sent to a rehabilitation centres that offer therapy, skill building, education, etc.

@8KK5RT84yrs4Y

@8K3HRDL4yrs4Y
Yes, if proper rehabilitation steps were taken so the individual could be a functional member of society.
@8K2G2VK4yrs4Y
Depends on the crime they committed and their mental state.
@8JR6GFY4yrs4Y
only if the criminal is placed under watch for a few years after. if said criminal commits another crime, then put them back.
@8JQLXFS4yrs4Y
We should increase the opportunity for rehabilitation
The prisoners should get support to help them with issues of why they got to prison in the first place. Mental health? Poor socio-economic class? Lack of education? Drugs?
@8JHT3774yrs4Y
It depends on the crime, people who didn't commit a violent crime could still be dangerous. It should depend on the crime, the criminals charges need to be assessed. This is not a simple yes or no, most crimes are not simple yes or no. IT IS NOT BLACK AND WHITE
@8HSQLR54yrs4Y
Yes they should be released, but not to reduce overcrowding, they should be released to be rehabilitated
@8HGLWC54yrs4Y
Have them check in with a officer/counselor
@8H6JLM34yrs4Y
Yes, but provide mandatory rehabilitation for those serving outside of a prison facility.
Instead of prisons, there should be rehabilitation based off of the crime
@8DYJCZP5yrs5Y
It depends on what the person is in prison for.
@8D49KRL5yrs5Y
Remove Prisons and rehabilitate prisoners
@8D3LRL65yrs5Y
If the prisoners did not commit a felony then yes they should be release, and they must serve community service twice a week
@8VPBX7TNew Democratic4yrs4Y
Yes, but develop more rehabilitation programs for non-violent offenders to prevent reoffending
@8NJ4NK54yrs4Y
Offences that at minor as well as non violent Prisoners should be released after a set time if well behaved
@8JRM9DF4yrs4Y
I think they should be released by with a lot of supports. Most people don't commit crimes because they want to be criminals, they commit crimes out of desperation. If they had resources, supports, retraining, optional relocation, etc., it would be better for society to have more people contributing to communities in a positive way than in prison.
@8HQGSHX4yrs4Y
yes, but just keep an eye on them
@8G9WV87New Democratic4yrs4Y
Yes, but they should be provided with sufficient rehabilitation
@6Y6SKYH5yrs5Y
The real reason that overcrowding is a problem in prisons is because the prison system is privatized and for-profit. We need to stop unnecessary mandatory minimums and the disproportional incarceration of Black Americans.
@8WCV5PP3yrs3Y
Yes to an extent, those who have been convicted because of burglary and drug use should also not be released because they can be dangerous to those in their community
@8ZPHR883yrs3Y
Yes, but we should abolish the current prison system in favor of restorative justice system.
