The European Commission has proposed its largest-ever budget for 2028–2034, totaling nearly €2 trillion, aiming to boost competitiveness, defense, and strategic autonomy.
However, the plan has sparked widespread criticism from member states, environmental groups, and farmers, who fear cuts to agricultural and biodiversity funding and question the budget's ability to meet climate and development goals. Germany and other key contributors have rejected the proposal, citing concerns over excessive spending and insufficient focus on core priorities. The budget also includes a significant increase in aid for Ukraine and shifts more funds toward newer eastern EU members, further fueling internal disputes.
As negotiations begin, the EU faces a tough battle to balance ambition with unity and fiscal reality.
